World health day: My health, My right

Earlier we had discussed various ways to improve our mental health and well-being through nutritious brain foods and engaging in regular exercises, such as yoga and meditation. We try our best to maintain a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle but a hiccup somehow occurs. That hiccup is Disease.

The common health conditions that we face today are heart-related or gastric-related, but brain conditions are hardly touched and need public awareness.

Over the years, mental health disorders have been a major issue and questions arise by some, Can I lead a normal life? Will I be able to carry out my daily routine again? Will I ever get cured? In some form or another, brain conditions have a great impact on our daily lives, for example, headaches, migraine, stress and anxiety.

Parkinson's Disease

Neurological conditions are now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide and over 1 in 3 people are affected.  We have only heard about some conditions and don't know much in depth. As well as World Health Day, it is also Parkinson's Week. Let's shed some facts on this disease, known as The Shaking Palsy.

Parkinson's Disease is the fastest-growing brain condition in the world despite gender and age.  No cause has been known for this type of disease. However, today scientists find that it can be associated with genetics or environmental factors.  Symptoms vary from person to person. They usually begin to affect one side of the body, gradually worsening over time.  Parkinson's can greatly reduce one's quality of life/well-being.

Symptoms

💙 Tremor of the hands/fingers

💙 Slow Movement

💙 Poor imbalance and coordination

💙 Speech/writing difficulties

💙 Lack of sleep

Managing PD and Ongoing Research

This disease has no cure. Therapies, medicines, surgery, and rehabilitation are given by specialists to promote healthy living. However, scientists have discovered that deep brain stimulation and therapies can help tremors and reduce the need for medicines.  Indian researchers are proposing a new therapy for PD. According to their latest findings, sometimes the iron quantity becomes so high that it adversely impacts the Hippocampus, one of the vital components of the brain. This is why some PD patients suffer from memory loss. Researchers are now stating that a combination of glutathione (antioxidant) and a class of iron removal agents should be a possible medicine for PD. However, this has to be tested through clinical trials first.

Other sources like Rehabilitation will include physiotherapy, muscle strength training, gait and balance training.

Tai chi is a Chinese martial art and with its very slow controlled movement through gentle meditation, may curb some symptoms of PD for several years.  By regular exercise, depending on the recommendations by the physiotherapist,  PD can have many benefits

👩🏽‍⚕️ Reduced risk of falling

👩🏽‍⚕️ Improved body posture

👩🏽‍⚕️ Improved coordination and balance

👩🏽‍⚕️ Improved joint mobility

👩🏽‍⚕️ Reduced stress levels

👩🏽‍⚕️ Greater confidence in performing daily activities

👩🏽‍⚕️ Greater muscle strength and flexibility

If you know of anyone or a loved one who is suffering from PD, they are not alone. Support teams are available like neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, and specialist nurses to help you.

Anyone can be affected by a mental illness. You can lead a normal life, there is no discrimination and you are no different. You are fighting every day and becoming yourself every day. It is all worth it!
